So you're moving to Monticello โ or at least seriously considering it. Good choice. Here's what to know before you arrive and where to find everything once you're here.
The Big Picture
Monticello is the county seat of Jasper County, located in Central Georgia about 70 miles southeast of Atlanta. Population in the city is around 2,500, with the county totaling approximately 14,600. Jasper County is part of the Atlanta Metropolitan Statistical Area โ close enough to the city for occasional trips, far enough to feel completely rural. That's exactly the appeal for most people who move here.
Schools
The Jasper County School System serves K-12 students across four schools. Jasper County High School โ home of the Wildcats โ anchors the community with a strong athletics tradition. AP courses, career and technical pathways, and arts programs round out the academic offering. Enrollment information is available through the district website.
Healthcare
For primary care, Primary Care Center of Monticello offers comprehensive outpatient services with a focus on the whole family. Village Medical โ Monticello handles walk-in needs with extended hours. Monticello Family Dentistry is accepting new patients. For major hospital services, Navicent Health in Macon and Piedmont Rockdale in Conyers are accessible within an hour.
Local Favorites
Start at the Martha Jane's Southern Cookin' for breakfast, grab coffee at Morning Grind, and head to GRITZ N BBQ for lunch when they're open. Mesquite Mexican Grill is the go-to for dinner out with the family.
Outdoor Recreation
Jasper County's greatest asset may be its proximity to public land. The Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge (35,000 acres) and the Oconee National Forest (115,000 acres) are minutes from Monticello, offering world-class birding, hiking, fishing, and hunting for free or nearly free.
Community Life
The Jasper County Courthouse square is the social heart of Monticello. The Jasper County Public Library is an excellent community resource. Wildcat football games draw the whole county on Friday nights. The pace here is slower than the city โ intentionally so. Most people who move to Monticello say it's the best decision they ever made.
