π¬ About Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge
The Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge is one of Jasper County's greatest natural assets β and one of the most significant wildlife conservation areas in all of Central Georgia. Established in 1939 on land that had been depleted by intensive cotton farming, the refuge now spans approximately 35,000 acres of restored Georgia Piedmont forest, providing critical habitat for hundreds of species of birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians.
The refuge is particularly famous among birders for its population of the endangered Red-cockaded Woodpecker, one of the Southeast's most sought-after species. Deer, wild turkey, fox, and many other native Georgia species inhabit the forests. Over 35 miles of trails traverse the refuge, ranging from easy flat walks to more rugged terrain through the upland pine forests.
Fishing is permitted in Allison Lake and other water bodies within the refuge with a valid Georgia fishing license. Hunting seasons for deer, turkey, and small game are managed by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service β check the refuge website for current regulations and season dates. The refuge visitor center provides maps, educational exhibits, and program information. Admission is always free.
The Piedmont NWR is administered jointly with the adjacent Oconee National Forest, creating a combined public land area that provides exceptional outdoor recreation right here in Jasper County.
