๐ŸŽฌ Hollywood Connection: The Jasper County Courthouse in Monticello was used for filming the courthouse scenes in the beloved 1992 comedy My Cousin Vinny. Although the film is set in the fictional Beechum County, Alabama, Sheriff Farley actually mentions Jasper County, Georgia by name near the film's end. The courthouse still stands on the square today โ€” one of Georgia's most photographed historic courthouses.
Pre-1800s โ€” Indigenous Peoples

Before European settlement, this land was home to Cherokee and Muscogee Creek peoples who had inhabited Central Georgia for thousands of years. The area was known for its fertile piedmont land, forests, and waterways.

December 10, 1807 โ€” County Founded

Jasper County was created from land originally part of Baldwin County by an act of the Georgia General Assembly. It was initially named Randolph County after Virginia statesman John Randolph. Monticello was established as the county seat.

December 10, 1812 โ€” Renamed Jasper County

After John Randolph opposed U.S. entry into the War of 1812, the General Assembly renamed the county in honor of Sergeant William Jasper โ€” a celebrated hero of the American Revolutionary War from South Carolina, known for his bravery at the Battle of Fort Moultrie and the Siege of Savannah.

1821 โ€” Newton County Created

Newton County was carved from a portion of the original Jasper County territory as the region's population grew. This reduced Jasper County to roughly its current boundaries.

Early 1800s โ€” Cotton Economy

Following the invention of the cotton gin, Jasper County became a significant cotton-producing region. Large plantations operated across the piedmont landscape, shaping the county's economy and demographics through the antebellum period.

1939 โ€” Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge Established

The U.S. government acquired and designated land in Jasper and Jones counties as the Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge โ€” one of the first efforts to restore exhausted farmland to productive wildlife habitat in the Southeast. Today it encompasses approximately 35,000 acres.

1992 โ€” My Cousin Vinny Filmed in Monticello

Hollywood came to Monticello when the production of My Cousin Vinny, starring Joe Pesci and Marisa Tomei, used the Jasper County Courthouse for all courtroom scenes. The film became a beloved comedy classic and put Monticello on the cinematic map.

21st Century โ€” Atlanta MSA Growth

Jasper County was formally incorporated into the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell Metropolitan Statistical Area, reflecting its growing ties to the Atlanta economy.
