Jasper County is the kind of place that people drive through without stopping โ and kick themselves later when they find out what they missed. Here's what's worth your time in and around Monticello.
1. See the My Cousin Vinny Courthouse
The Jasper County Courthouse on the Monticello square is more than a government building โ it's a piece of American film history. Stand on the courthouse steps and you'll recognize every angle from the 1992 classic. Then grab a coffee at Morning Grind right on the square.
2. Explore the Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge
Thirty-five thousand acres of restored Georgia piedmont forest with 35+ miles of trails, excellent birding (including the endangered Red-cockaded Woodpecker), fishing, and hunting. The Piedmont NWR is one of the Southeast's great outdoor destinations โ and admission is always free.
3. Hike the Oconee National Forest
The Oconee National Forest borders Jasper County to the north and west, providing additional hiking, camping, fishing, and hunting across 115,000 acres of public land.
4. Eat at the Martha Jane's Southern Cookin'
The Martha Jane's Southern Cookin' is the town's culinary anchor โ a scratch-cooked Southern breakfast institution that you shouldn't leave Jasper County without trying.
5. Walk the Historic Courthouse Square
Monticello's downtown square is genuinely lovely โ antebellum-era architecture, local shops, and the kind of unhurried pace that reminds you why small-town Georgia has its devotees. Spend a Saturday morning here and you'll understand.
