The Oconee National Forest is 115,000 acres of public land spread across Central Georgia, with a significant portion adjacent to Jasper County. Managed by the U.S. Forest Service as part of the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests system, the Oconee district provides outdoor recreation for the entire region.

Camping

Multiple campgrounds within the forest offer primitive and developed camping at very low cost. The Lake Sinclair Recreation Area provides full-featured camping, picnicking, and lake access on a beautiful reservoir. Sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis for most of the year, with some sites accepting advance reservations through recreation.gov.

Fishing

Fishing in the Oconee National Forest's streams, ponds, and reservoirs is a major draw. Largemouth bass, crappie, bream, and catfish are all present in the forest's water bodies. A valid Georgia fishing license is required for all anglers 16 and older and is available at most sporting goods stores or online at georgia.gov.

Hunting

The Oconee National Forest is open to hunting for deer, turkey, squirrel, and other small game in season. Georgia hunting regulations apply, and hunters must comply with current licensing requirements. The Forest Service website provides detailed maps of permitted hunting areas and season dates.

Hiking and OHV Trails

A system of hiking trails winds through the forest, with routes ranging from short walks to longer treks that connect with the adjacent Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge. A designated OHV (off-highway vehicle) trail system in the northern portion of the forest is popular with ATV and dirt bike riders.

Getting There

From Monticello, take US-441 North to access the Oconee National Forest. The Forest Service Ranger District office in Monticello can provide maps and current information: (478) 752-8800.
